A pip is a standardized unit of price movement, but the exact pip size depends on the quote convention of the instrument (for example, whether the instrument uses a 2-decimal or 4-decimal style). A “pip calculation” can mean either:

  1. converting a price change into a pip count, or
  2. converting that pip count into a value in a chosen account currency.

Because both meanings use inputs that can vary, errors usually come from incorrect assumptions about quote format, the price used, instrument contract specifications, or currency conversion.

Step B: Determine which prices are being compared. Clarify whether the price change is based on bid-to-bid, ask-to-ask, or mid-price. Even without discussing trading actions, mixing bid and ask in an inconsistent way changes the effective price difference.

Step C: Compute pip count from the price difference. Pip count is proportional to the absolute price difference divided by the pip size.

Step D: Convert pips into monetary value (only if needed). Monetary pip value depends on the contract size (the number of base units represented per lot or per position unit) and on how the quote currency relates to your account currency. That conversion often requires a separate rate.

Consider a hypothetical instrument quoted with a pip size of 0.0001. If the intended price change is 0.0020, then the pip count is 0.0020 / 0.0001 = 20 pips.
