In plain terms, liquidity describes how easily an asset can be traded near a chosen price, with limited price movement and acceptable trading costs. Those tradeability properties depend on how orders are executed, because execution venue determines the order’s route, the counterparties it can reach, and the way execution costs and delays show up.
A useful way to separate ideas is:
- Market-side liquidity: how much depth and willingness to trade exists for the asset.
- Execution-side liquidity: how your order actually gets filled given routing, timing, and execution rules.
Execution venue primarily affects the second one: the liquidity you experience.
Mechanisms: routing, access to counterparties, and price discovery
Execution venue can affect liquidity definition through three common mechanisms.
