What is a currency converter?
A currency converter is a tool that converts a monetary amount from one currency into another using an exchange rate. In the context of forex calculators, it is typically used to estimate how much a position in currency A would be worth in currency B, based on a chosen rate.

- An indicative rate is an estimated or reference value meant for calculation or display.

Mechanics you should verify before trusting outputs

Limitations and risks
A currency converter is best seen as an estimation tool rather than a promise of a tradable outcome.
Market uncertainty Exchange rates change continuously. A converter uses a snapshot (or an approximate reference) of the rate. That snapshot can become outdated immediately, especially during periods of higher volatility.
Mismatch with real-world execution Because converters typically calculate from reference rates, their output can differ from actual forex execution due to spreads and other costs. This is a core limitation when converting amounts for real transactions.
Interpretation risk If you misunderstand the quoted rate convention (what the “pair” means) or select the wrong direction, the output can be numerically wrong even if the converter is functioning correctly.
Verification risk If the converter relies on a single rate source, you may not know whether the rate is indicative, mid-based, or delayed. Without cross-checking, you can mistake the tool’s displayed rate for an always-accurate market price.
How to reduce uncertainty (non-transactional verification)
- Compare the converter output using the same currencies and amount against at least one additional independent rate reference.
- Check the timestamp of the displayed/used rate.
- Confirm the pair direction and how the tool defines the exchange rate.
- If you later execute a transaction, treat the converter’s result as an estimate until you see the executable quote.
