What Pivot Points are

Pivot calculations require a prior period. If the prior period definition changes (daily vs. weekly, or different session cutoffs), the input prices change and the resulting levels can shift. Traders often overlook that “the prior day” may not match the calendar day they expect.

3) They do not guarantee outcomes

Pivot Points are descriptive reference levels, not forecasts. Any apparent success can be coincidental or regime-dependent. When markets transition (for example, higher volatility, different trend behavior, or major news periods), the tendency for price to react around these levels may change.

4) Confirmation bias is a risk in practice

Because many people visualize the same reference framework, it can be tempting to interpret almost any touch or bounce as meaningful. For independent verification, it helps to test the method historically using clearly defined rules (what level counts as a “reaction,” what window defines the event, and what data the method uses). Without such definitions, conclusions can become subjective.

How to independently verify relevance

A practical, non-predictive way to evaluate Pivot Points is to ask whether they add consistent explanatory value compared to simpler alternatives. For example, you can check:

  • How often price reaches and then turns around near computed levels (according to a predefined tolerance).
