Define rollover before judging its limits
Rollover is the process of carrying an open currency position from one settlement day into the next. In practice, this carry often shows up as an overnight “swap” cost or credit, which can increase or decrease your position value over time.
To discuss limitations, it helps to separate two parts:
- Stable mechanics: rollover represents carrying a position forward to a new date.
- Variable conditions: the size and direction of the swap effect depend on changing market conditions and on how a specific provider calculates and applies costs.
Without that separation, it is easy to assume a predictable cost or impact that may not hold.
How rollover typically works (mechanism and inputs)
For many FX retail setups, rollover is applied around the provider’s daily rollover schedule. Conceptually, the swap amount you see reflects the interest-rate differential between the two currencies, adjusted for provider-specific rules and fees.
Even if you understand the underlying idea, several inputs can shift:
- Market conditions: interest-rate differentials can move as rates change.
- Provider cost model: providers may express carry through their own swap formulas and rounding rules.

If the provider applies adjustments, spreads, or specific calculation conventions, the swap shown on your account may not match a generic estimate.
2) Small carry can be overwhelmed by changing conditions
Even if rollover looks favorable over a period, market changes can alter the interest-rate differential and swap rate direction. In that case, the carry effect may shrink, reverse, or become less meaningful relative to other sources of variation.
3) Timing assumptions break
People often assume “overnight” means a single uniform 24-hour period. In reality, rollover depends on settlement rules and provider timing cut-offs, so the period that triggers swap can differ from your expectation. This makes comparisons difficult if the start and end times are not aligned.
4) Historical relationships do not predict future results
A last limitation is that past carry behavior does not establish future results. Even when two elements appear correlated in the past (for example, relative interest rates and observed swaps), that relationship can change when rates, market expectations, or provider calculations shift.
Verification: what you can independently check
To verify what rollover will likely mean for a specific situation, focus on what you can observe directly rather than on assumptions.
- Use your provider’s posted swap details: compare the swap schedule and how it is applied for the relevant instruments.
- Check the rollover timestamps: confirm when swap is credited or charged on your account.
- Reconcile example math with your account outputs: if you do any calculation, state assumptions (position size, dates/timing, and the exact swap rate basis) and then see whether results match what your account reports.
A practical next question is: Which dates and cut-off times trigger rollover for my setup, and how does my provider compute the swap amount shown on my statements? That question is usually more actionable than trying to treat rollover as a predictable, self-correcting effect.
