What a margin calculator is

Forex trading with leverage means you control a larger notional position than the cash you post. Brokers typically require you to keep a minimum amount of your funds as collateral—this is the margin.

- Contract size (units): How many base-currency units the position represents.
- Notional value: The position’s value in account-relevant terms.
- Leverage: The ratio that links notional exposure to margin required.

Suppose a calculator uses a simplified approach where margin required is proportional to notional exposure divided by leverage.
Assume:
- You enter position size that the calculator converts to a notional value of N in your account currency.
- You enter leverage of L.
A simplified educational formula many learners see is:
- Estimated margin required ≈ N ÷ L
Then the calculator reports:
- Margin required ≈ N ÷ L
- If your account has balance or equity E, it may show an available margin estimate like E − (N ÷ L)

A margin calculator’s workflow is usually predictable:

- Enter leverage or margin rate to determine how much collateral is required.
- Provide price and account currency assumptions if the tool needs them.
- Read margin required for that hypothetical position.
- Compare to your account funds using the tool’s definition of available/free margin.

Margin calculators are useful, but several limitations can make them differ from reality:
